Compass Clinic is proud to offer Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), which is a widely used and well-researched therapeutic approach commonly used to treat a variety of concerns. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy can be an effective form of treatment for the following:

  • Anger Management
  • Anxiety (Generalized, Social), Phobias and Panic Attacks
  • Depression
  • Eating Concerns
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Relationship Problems
  • Sleeping Difficulties
  • Trauma

This short-term solution focused approach is used for individuals of all ages. The number of sessions required depends on an individual and their circumstances, but therapy generally ranges from 5 to 20 sessions.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy seeks to promote change by examining the connection between our thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Specifically, the therapy seeks to address:

Cognitions: Our thoughts, beliefs, assumptions and attitudes shape how we experience our daily life. It is often not the events themselves, but the meaning we attribute to them that affects how we view ourselves and situations. An element of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy involves challenging negative thoughts to correct misinterpretations that hold us back.

Behaviours: Maladaptive behaviours and ineffective coping strategies often contribute to distress. CBT focuses on skillful problem-solving to help clients respond to feelings in healthy ways.

How is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy different than other therapies?

CBT is a short-term, solution focused approach that is grounded in a client’s present reality. Although our past experiences shape our cognitions and behavioural patterns, this approach seeks to promote change based on current experiences and emotions. This type of therapy is structured and oriented around goals that are developed in the initial sessions. Clients can expect that homework will be a part of therapy so that they are using skills in their daily life to practice coping.
